Moldavite is a glass of tectonic origin, formed by the impact of a huge meteorite on Earth (specifically in the German Reis crater). The heat caused by the impact of this body melted the surrounding rocks and scattered them far and wide, where today's deposits were formed. It is a rare "stone", the sources of which are being mined and depleted over time.
