Lemon Mint Essential Oil: Benefits, Uses, and Aromatherapy Tips

BREATHING – CALMING – REFRESHING

Lemon mint (Menta aquatica var. citrata, Lamiaceae family) is a variety of water mint (Mentha aquatica L.).

Lemon mint

Water mint often crosses, the results are, for example, bush mint: Mentha xdumetorum, peppermint: Mentha piperita (Mentha aquatica x Mentha spicata – spearmint) and spearmint: Mentha xverticillata (Mentha aquatica x Mentha arvensis – field mint).

Hybrids contain less menthol than water mint itself, which is not used in the food industry, but is used in the perfume and cosmetics industry, mainly due to its linalool content (a delicate, floral scent with a citrus aroma).

The essential oil is extracted from the leaves and tips of the lemon mint plant. It has a refreshing, lemony-menthol scent that is great for air fresheners. You can add a few drops to cleaning products.

In aromatherapy it is used:

  • to relax the respiratory tract during rhinitis and colds by indirect inhalation (aroma lamp/aroma diffuser),

  • to relieve stress and tension,

  • for refreshment and encouragement in case of mental fatigue.

Notice
The essential oil is a gentle alternative to peppermint, but is not suitable for children under 3 years of age due to possible respiratory irritation.More in our guide for parents...

A tip for a gentle massage mixture for children for a peaceful sleep

  • 10 ml of almond, apricot or jojoba oil,

  • 1 drop of lemon mint essential oil,

  • You can add 1 drop of lavender essential oil.

Mix everything and store in a dark glass jar. The mixture can be used to massage your feet, back or chest before going to bed. Before applying the mixture to a larger area, do a tolerance test on a small area of skin to see if there is an allergy: earlobe, inner side of the arm, do not leave it on for 24 hours.

Tip for a mixture for an aroma diffuser

  • 1 drop lemon mint,

  • 1 drop sweet orange,

  • 1 drop of lavender.

Add 1-2 drops of the mixture to a diffuser. Let the diffuser run for 20 to 30 minutes, before bed or when irritated. Ventilate the room.
Warning: not intended for children under 3 years of age.

If you don't have an aroma diffuser, use an aroma stone or a bowl of warm water.

To use the aroma stone: add 1 to 3 drops directly into the center of the stone (do not dilute the mixture or single-component essential oil). The oil will soak into the stone and gradually release the scent. After a few hours, when the scent has faded, you can add a few more drops.

Essential oils are used exclusively externally; they must always be diluted on the skin, e.g. in olive, sunflower, jojoba or other oil.
