The word orpiment is derived from the Latin auripigmentum, which can be translated as golden pigment. It is often found together with realgar - orange to reddish, with which it can merge into one type. It was used as a yellow dye until the 19th century.

Orpiment may contain traces of arsenic, and interestingly, it was used in ancient Rome to poison arrows.
The mineral does not serve as a toy for children.
