Azurite was named by the French mineralogist and geologist François Sulpice Beudant in 1824, from the Latin azureum, sky blue. In ancient Egypt, ground azurite was used as a color pigment for painting on canvas, but also for makeup, to highlight the eyes. It was used, for example, by the German painter, graphic artist and art theorist Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528). It often occurs together with malachite, which is formed by pseudomorphosis of azurite. Malachite is characterized by emerald green crystals.
