Orthoceras is a species of extinct cephalopod that lived 350-400 million years ago in shallow seas in what is now Morocco, near Erfoud. The animal lived in an elongated, conical shell. The fossilized shells of the animal are preserved in black limestone; this replicates the elongated shape of orthoceras.

In ancient times, fossils were believed to be gifts from the stars and were revered by many cultures, especially as talismans for protection and long life.
